How do I purchase a burn permit?

Online or in person Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30am to 4:30pm at the Fire Administration Office located at 250 Queen Street West, Fergus or at the Civic Centre located at 1 MacDonald Square, Elora.

Do I have to own the property?

Yes. If you do not own the property, you must obtain written permission from the property owner each year.

What can I burn?

Only clean dry wood such as small logs, branches and twigs.

What can I not burn?

Garbage, tires, grass, leaves, pressure treated wood, paper, metal, plastic or accelerant (i.e. gasoline, lighter fluid).

When Can I burn?

Burning is recommended between the hours of 7pm and 12am. For urban residential areas, it is recommended that you limit your burning to weekends. Burning is not to take place on Smog Alert days or when winds will cause smoke to be a safety hazard or an annoyance to nearby properties or roadways.

What happens if my Neighbour complains?

If the Fire Department receives a complaint, we will investigate. If it is deemed necessary, we will revoke the permit. Burning in Centre Wellington is a privilege, please be respectful of your Neighbours and follow all guidelines noted on your permit.
